Description

Throckmorton Fine Art is pleased to offer an exhibition of recent work by the acclaimed Guatemalan photographer, Luis González Palma. He is well-known for his stark portraits of men, women, and children staring intently at the camera. The gelatin silver prints have a coffee-colored tone, evocative of colonial-era photographs. But the whites of the eyes are left a stark white, heightening the intended focus on the “gaze”—the stare. González Palma has written that the face is a symbol of the human condition, and that the direct, unmediated, gaze of individuals reveals both their dignity and their fragility.

Faces poignantly captured by González Palma, in turn, attract the gaze of viewers and invite contemplation. The expressiveness—and the power—of his portraits are enhanced by the inclusion of props rich with historical significance. González Palma’s most recent work, executed in Argentina where he now resides, continues to suggest the emotional complexity behind faces, bodies, and even mundane objects from everyday life.

González Palma has achieved international recognition. His work has been widely shown, including at the Venice Bienniale. His photographs are in the collections of numerous museums, among them: the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Fogg Museum of Harvard University, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), and the Berlin Museum.
