Profile Information
During business trips to Spain in the 1950s, Texas philanthropist and oil financier Algur H. Meadows spent many hours at the Prado Museum in Madrid. The Prado's spectacular collection of European Old Masters and premier holdings of Spanish painting inspired Meadows to begin his own collection of Spanish art. In 1962, Meadows donated his collection of paintings to Southern Methodist University and founded the Meadows Museum in 1965 in memory of his first wife, Virginia Garrison Stuart Meadows. By the time of his death in 1978, Algur Meadows had established a distinguished collection that has made the Meadows Museum a world-famous center for the study and appreciation of Spanish art and culture.
