During the 1960s the directors of the Centro Artístico de Barranquilla and members of the Cueva group organised the Inter-American Biennials of Art with the support of the Organisation of American States (OAS). An important collection of Latin American art was created through these events. The collection was used to establish the first Museum of Modern Art in Barranquilla in 1974.
The MAMB’s collection emphasises Caribbean modern art from the second half of the 20th century bringing together a number of Caribbean Colombian, Cuban, Mexican and other artists. Without being too anthological it attempts a journey through some of the main aspects of artistic creation in the Caribbean.
The museum also organises temporary exhibitions which cast a critical eye over reality and are intended as a tool for the construction of the permanent collection. Extra activities organised around the temporary exhibitions explore some of the questions that arise within contemporary Caribbean society and which are reflected by the works of art exhibited. |
