Alfredo Ramos Martínez was born in Monterrey, México on November 12, 1872. Painter and muralist, at the age of nine Martínez did a portrait of the governor of Monterrey which was sent to an exhibition in San Antonio, Texas where he won first prize. This won him a scholarship to La Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City and following 14 years of art study in Paris, he returned to serve as its director in 1912 (one of his students was David Alfaro Siqueiros). In 1929 he moved to Los Angeles where he painted portraits, murals and Mexican peasant genre. Ramos Martínez died in Los Angeles on November 8, 1946.
