about this event

The Ministry of Culture, through the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the National Museum of Anthropology, in collaboration with Grupo Salinas Art and Culture, presents the exhibition The invention of memory. Photography and archeology in Mexico, which puts within reach of visitors the invaluable legacy of the pre-Hispanic past of Mexico with a transversal vision from the beginning of photography in our country and until the mid-twentieth century. 180 years after its invention, photography has had an enormous relevance in the field of archeology by contributing to the conformation of historical memory and the construction of many of the features that define our identity. The formal incorporation of this tool into archeology testifies both the greatness of the original cultures of Mexico and the fascination they have exerted over the centuries on researchers, humanists, scientists and artists from around the world. With curatorship of Mauricio Maillè, The invention of memory. Photography and archeology in Mexico shows an extraordinary selection of 225 documents and images that belong to the collections of the National Museum of Anthropology, the National Library of Anthropology and History, the National Photo Library of the inah and the Ricardo B. Salinas Pliego collection taken by notable photographers Mexicans and foreigners of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries who approached the archaeological heritage of Mexico: Désiré Charnay, Teoberto Maler, Edward Weston, Juan Rulfo, Héctor García, Nacho López, Alfred Briquet, José María Lupercio, Marilú Pease, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Yukio Futagawa and Armando Salas Portugal, among others. The exhibition The invention of memory. Photography and archeology in Mexico will be open to the public from November 21, 2019 until March 8, 2020 in room A1 of the National Museum of Anthropology.
