Gertrudis Goldschmidt, best known as GEGO, was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1912.

She received a degree in architecture from the prestigious University of Stuttgart in 1938; the following year she traveled to Venezuela. In 1957 she began working on her oeuvre of three dimensional sculptures, producing her well known sculpture entitled Sphere, which is now part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. During the 1960s she taught at the Escuela de Arquitecura de la Universidad Central de Venezuela and at the prestigious Instituto de Diseño Neuman. In 1966 she took a hiatus from teaching and devoted herself to her work at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, California. In 1969 her work was exhibited at the Center for Interamerican Relations in New York. In the 1970s GEGO completed a group of monumental works that combined aspects of sculpture with architecture and was honored with a major exhibition at the Galerías y Museos de Venezuela. In 1984 she completed the Dibujos sin Papel series. She began the Tejeduras series at the end of the 1980s.
